Yaaay!

OK, Quick few thoughts.

Issue: Cameron will have to go on the attack on the economy this week. He knows the murmurings in the Tory party and the press that the Tory response to the crisis have been lacklustre are beginning to hurt him, in Westminster if not yet in the wider world. So Probably after a fairly straight bat first question he’ll be aggressive and cutting in his second or third.

Response: When Cameron launches his “big attack”. PM should pause, then say something like “Once again, I would like to thank the right honourable gentleman for his sustained commitment to bi-partisan support and non-confrontational politics. He is, as ever, a model of consistency” before moving on to the substance.

Issue: Real Economy. The Tories have helpfully told the world that their attack on the PM will be based on help for the “real economy”.  With inflation up, unemployment likely to be up and demand slowing, they’re likely to be aggressive on this.

Response: Spike the guns. Announce programme of support for “real economy” first. Make it clear that there’s more to come. Point out that under the Tories fuel tax proposals we’d now be increasing taxes on fuel and abolishing the regional development agencies that will support businesses across the country.

Say that our immediate priority was the infrastructure of the economy and as that begins to stabilise the next stage will be help for families. If Cameron has been in patronising, aggressive form, finish with. “I look forward to him giving us the same fulsome support for our programme for families and businesses as he has offered over the last week – I just hope he’s able to keep it up a bit longer next time.”
